The current development of the chemical industry in Indonesia has entered the Industrial Revolution 4.0 Era, which demands the implementation of increasingly efficient, effective, and sustainable production processes. Digital transformation, automation, and process efficiency are the main keys for the industry to survive and compete. In this context, the optimization of chemical process engineering becomes a strategic element to enhance the performance and productivity of the chemical industry. This process optimization involves continuous change and development of the production system to yield economically valuable, socially beneficial, and environmentally friendly products. Therefore, there is a need for professional human resources with high competence who are capable of addressing the complex process challenges in the Industrial 4.0 era.

Based on a needs analysis, it is known that currently, manpower in strategic positions such as lead engineer or process development manager is still obtained through internal promotion or external recruitment. However, there are no applied master’s graduates specifically equipped with competence in chemical process engineering optimization. Seeing this opportunity and need, the Department of Chemical Engineering at State Polytechnic of Malang (Politeknik Negeri Malang) initiated the establishment of the Applied Master’s Program in Chemical Engineering Optimization. According to PD-DIKTI data, this program is the first in Indonesia to specifically focus on this field.

Kompetensi Lulusan

Graduates of the Applied Master’s Program in Chemical Engineering Optimization are equipped with various core competencies highly needed by the industry, particularly the chemical industry. Some of these key competencies include:

  • The ability to analyze and evaluate chemical industrial processes from the physics, chemistry, and biology perspectives.
  • The ability to perform process optimization, including making improvements to production systems for efficiency in energy, raw materials, and production time.
  • Mastery of chemical engineering software for process design and simulation, such as Aspen Plus, HYSYS, or MATLAB Simulink.
  • The ability to develop technology and innovation, especially in the field of research and development (R&D).
  • The ability to manage quality control and quality assurance, as well as implement an OHS (Occupational Health and Safety) system in industrial process units.
  • The ability to develop work systems based on sustainability and occupational safety that meet national and international standards.
  • Academic and pedagogical skills for graduates who aspire to become lecturers or professional educators in the field of chemical engineering.

Process Engineer

  • Able to identify and analyze process parameters in the chemical industry.
  • Able to perform process optimization and evaluation to increase efficiency and safety in production processes.
  • Proficient in chemical engineering software for process design and simulation.

Researcher / R&D Engineer

  • Able to discover and develop new process technologies or modify existing processes.
  • Able to keep up with scientific developments and apply them on an industrial scale.

Quality Control & Quality Assurance

  • Able to design quality control systems and quality assurance procedures for products and processes.
  • Develop consistent and safe production process standards.

Health & Safety Engineer

  • Proficient in OHS (Occupational Health and Safety) management systems within industrial processes.
  • Able to conduct safety audits and develop accident prevention procedures.
